For Screen Sharing

PXS Helper for Mac

Your Mac in a PXS Desktop window, as smooth video with sound. A small free app for the Mac's menu bar; the phone finds it on your network by itself.

Download for Mac

Version 1.0.3 · macOS 14 or later · Apple silicon and Intel · Free

Needs PXS Desktop 1.2 or later on iPhone or iPad.

Set up in a minute

  1. Install it on the Mac

Open the download and drag PXS Helper to Applications. Open it: a small window says it is running, and its icon appears in the menu bar. There is no account.

  2. Allow two things, once

macOS asks for Screen Recording, so the helper can send the screen, and for Accessibility, so your pointer and keyboard work on the Mac. The helper's menu shows a button for each until it is done.

  3. Open Screen Sharing in PXS Desktop

With the phone and the Mac on the same network, the Mac appears in the list by itself. Choose it.

  4. Compare the code, click Allow

The first time, the Mac and PXS Desktop show the same six digits. Click Allow on the Mac. After that the phone connects straight away, with no code and no password.

Good to know

Why a helper

PXS Desktop can also reach a Mac with nothing installed, through the Mac's built-in Screen Sharing. That sends still pictures and manages about a dozen a second. The helper sends video from the Mac's own video chip, which is what makes scrolling and films smooth, and it carries the Mac's sound.

Stays on your network

The phone and the Mac talk directly to each other. No account, no server in between, and nothing is sent to us. It works on the same Wi-Fi or wired network; reaching the Mac from elsewhere is not part of this version.

Only devices you allow

A phone gets nowhere until you have clicked Allow on the Mac for it. The helper's menu lists the devices you have allowed, with a Forget button for each, and shows when one is connected.

One display at a time

With several displays on the Mac, PXS Desktop shows one and lets you switch. The picture is sent at the size your PXS window draws it, so a small window does not cost a large picture.

Sound

The Mac's sound plays where you are. While a phone is listening, the Mac's own speakers are muted, and they come back when it leaves. Both can be switched off in the helper's menu.

A locked or sleeping Mac

Neither is an obstacle. Connecting wakes the Mac and its display and shows the lock screen, and you type the Mac's password from the phone to log in. Waking from sleep needs Wake for network access, which is in System Settings under Battery or Energy.
